There are some darker themes explored in the Harry Potter series. Some parents may not find it appropriate for children. Parents of Preschool - Level 2 should be advised.

 

Preschool: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Understand who Harry Potter is. Who are his two best friends? What is Hogwarts? Who is the author of the Harry Potter series?

_____2.* When you go to Hogwarts, you can choose to take one animal with you. Typically, your options are an owl, a rat, a cat, or a toad. Which animal would you take with you and what would you name it?

 

Level 1: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Preschool requirements 1 & 2. Read or have read to you at least one Harry Potter book.

_____2.* Watch at least one Harry Potter movie and compare it to the book it was based on. What are some differences you notice? Do you think the casting was done well?

 

Level 2: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 1 requirements 1 & 2. Read at least two Harry Potter books.

_____2.* Write a short biography about J.K. Rowling's life. How did she come up with the idea for Harry Potter? How did the series change her life? There are a few documentaries about her. Watch one and compare it to the biography you wrote.

 

Level 3: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 2 requirements 1 & 2. Read at least four Harry Potter books.

_____2.* Learn about the history of the Hogwarts Houses. Who were their founders, and what personality traits did each one favor? Who are the House Ghosts? Name several characters from the book in each house. Also, with a parent's permission, find a quiz online that will sort you into a Hogwarts House! (The one from Pottermore.com is great and was designed by J.K. Rowling).

 

Level 4: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 3 requirements 1 & 2. Read the entire Harry Potter series.

_____2.* Name and learn about at least twenty different spells, charms or curses from the series. (For example, Wingardium Leviosa is a charm that allows an object to levitate.) Also, design your own spell or charm. What would it be called and what would it do?

 

Level 5: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 4 requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

 

Optional Requirements:

_____3. What is Quidditch? Learn about the history of the game and some famous Quidditch teams in the Wizarding world. What are the different positions? The different objects used? Name some of the positions that characters from the book play, such as Harry playing seeker for the Gryffindor team.

_____4. Hogwarts is not the only Wizarding school in the world. How many other Wizarding schools are there and what countries are they located in? If given the option, which school would you attend and why?

_____5. A major theme in Harry Potter is having courage. How does Harry display courage and bravery on multiple occasions? List examples from the books or movies. Also, earn the Courage badge.

_____6. If possible, visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando or Hollywood. If it's not possible, research the theme park online and learn about it's history. Which rides would you want to go on? Which foods would you want to eat?

_____7. The series has some unique food and drinks. Find a recipe online from the series and recreate it at home. Examples include pumpkin juice, treacle tart, Hogwarts steak and kidney pie, cauldron cakes, etc.

_____8. There are several magical creatures featured throughout the series, including house elves, goblins, hippogriffs, mermaids, werewolves, ghosts, unicorns, etc. Pick two magical creatures and learn about them and how they relate to Harry Potter's world. What occupations do they typically have? Where are they most commonly found? Of the two creatures you picked, who does Harry Potter encounter and how do they help or hinder his journey? (For example, if you picked house elves, you can talk about how Dobby sacrificed himself for Harry).

_____9. Research the different classes available at Hogwarts. Name as many as you can think of. If you could take classes there, which ones would you take? Who were some of your favorite teachers from the series? If you could create your own class, what would it be?

_____10. As students get older, they must take exams before they can graduate. Learn about the O.W.L.S. and the N.E.W.T.S. What subjects do these exams cover and what must students do to pass each one?

_____11. There are many occupations throughout the Wizarding World. Name as many as you can think of, such as Auror, Ministry of Magic worker, Dragon trainer, Hogwarts teacher, etc. Pick your top three occupations and learn about what a wizard or witch must do to qualify for that job or occupation. What sort of post-Hogwarts education would you need?

_____12. Research wands and how they are made. What are the different wand cores you can have? What type of wood can a wand be made out of? Design your own wand, and what type of core and wood it would be made from.

_____13. Learn about the many different locations visited in the Harry Potter series. Pick one and explain how it is relevant to the story and how it affected the characters. Learn about it's history and which characters, if any, lived there. (Examples include Godric's Hollow, Shell Cottage, the Burrow, Hogsmeade, Ministry of Magic, etc.)

_____14. Potions are explored throughout the series, some good and some bad. Name at least ten potions, what they do, and some of the ingredients needed for each one. If you could create your own potion, what it do and what ingredients would it need? (Examples include Polyjuice Potion, Love Potion, Wolfsbane Potion, etc.)

_____15. Who is the cast of the Harry Potter movies? Pick ten actors or actresses and learn about them. Who is your favorite and why?

_____16. What sort of shops and restaurants would you find in Diagon Alley? If possible, find a virtual tour of Diagon Alley online and explore it. Name several of the shops that Hogwarts students need to visit in order to prepare for the school year.

_____17. There are many different modes of transportation in the Wizarding world, such as broomstick, floo powder, apparition, portkey, etc. Learn about each one. Which way would you use to travel if you could?

_____18. Make your own Harry Potter costume, such as a Hogwarts uniform or invisibility cloak.

_____19. Create a craft related to the series, such as a Christmas ornament, t-shirt, magnet, etc.

_____20. Participate in a charity event related to the series, such as a book drive.
