Preschool: Â Do 3 requirements including the 2 starred.
_____ 1.* Â Learn basic farm equipment safety including:
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Wear seatbelts whenever your ride in a truck, tractor, or other large machine.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Wear appropriate clothing such as heavy boots with no baggy or loose clothing that might get
caught in machinery. Â Make sure you wear sun protection if necessary.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Wear long hair tied back or secured under a hat.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â If your equipment requires safety goggles or ear plugs, make sure you wear them.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Always be aware of uneven ground, other equipment around you, and wandering animals or
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Listen to and obey all adults in authority.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Do not operate any Â machinery until you have been fully trained and approved by an adult. Â Do
not operate any machinery you are not completely comfortable with. Â Most states require children to
be at least 16 years old before operating motorized farm equipment.
â¢ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â If you have any questions about what you should or should not do, ask an adult!
_____ 2.* Â Identify at least three different types of farm equipment. Â Examples might include a tractor,
a milking machine, an ATV, a rototiller, a seeder, a sprayer, a mower, a backhoe, etc.
Level 1: Â Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred
_____ 1.* Â Do Preschool requirements 1 & 2. Â Be able to identify at least 4 different types of farm
_____ 2.* Â Make a list of as many different types of farm equipment as you can think of (at least 10).
How might the equipment needed on one type of farm differ from that on another such as a dairy
farm and a vegetable farm, or a cattle farm and a chicken farm.
Level 2: Â Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred
_____ 1.* Â Do Level 1 requirements 1 & 2. Â Be able to identify at least 5 different types of farm
_____ 2.* Â Learn about the history of farm equipment. Â How has technology improved the farming
Level 3: Â Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred
_____ 1.* Â Do Level 2 requirements 1 & 2. Â Be able to identify at least 6 different types of farm
_____ 2.* Â Choose a piece of farm equipment and create a timeline of its development. Â What could
be done to make this piece of equipment even more useful and efficient? (This requirement may be
repeated as an optional requirement)
Level 4: Â Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred
_____ 1.* Â Do Level 3 requirements 1 & 2. Â Be able to identify at least 7 different types of farm
_____ 2.* Â Create a poster, essay, or booklet that compares and contrasts two leading brands of a
specific piece of farm equipment such as tractors. Â Which would you purchase? Â Why?
_____ 3. Â Visit a farm and learn about the equipment needed to run it. Â (This requirement can be
repeated if you visit different types of farms with different equipment.)
_____ 4. Â Dream up an invention for a new piece of farm equipment. Â What would it do? Â How would it
do it? Â What would the machine look like? Â How would it be powered and operated?
_____ 5. Â Â Create a 3D model of a piece of farm equipment.
_____ 6. Â Participate in a service project that has something to do with farm equipment such as
helping to fundraise to buy equipment for a community garden.
_____ 7. Â Learn how to use a piece of farm equipment.
_____ 8. Â Create a poster, website, or booklet to show what you have learned about farm equipment.
_____ 9. Â Learn how a piece of farm equipment runs. Â Understand how the motor operates, how the
moving parts work, etc.
_____ 10. Â How much does farm equipment cost? Â Create a realistic budget for an imaginary farm.
How much money would you need to purchase the basic equipment needed to run your type of
farm. Â Which pieces of equipment would be nice to have, but are not necessary and may be
eliminated if the budget gets too tight?
