Preschool: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* What day is Earth Day? Why is this an important holiday? Discuss it with a parent or troop member.

_____2.* Find out what community events may take place around you. How do people participate in this day?

 

Level 1: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Preschool requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Find out (online or in books) about the history of Earth Day. Where is it celebrated in the world, and when? How did it begin? Why? Tell your troop what you have learned.

 

Level 2: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 1 requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Make an up-cycled craft and share it with your troop. You can use old cans, cardboard, etc.

 

Level 3: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 2 requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Participate in an Earth Day event in your community.

 

Level 4: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 3 requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Plan or help plan an Earth Day event for your troop. This could be a community service project, volunteering at the animal shelter, etc.

 

Level 5: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Level 4 requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____3. Find out what "up-cycled, reduce, and reuse" means. Write a short paragraph on each and how we can use them in our daily lives.

_____4. Adopt an area to clean up on a schedule.

_____5. Earn the Leave No Trace badge.

_____6. Meet at the local litter office and interview the litter officer.

_____7. Learn what programs are available in your state that are similar to Earth Day (such as "Keep Ohio Beautiful").

_____8. Learn who cleans three specific areas in your community, such as roadways or parks. Do they get paid or do they volunteer? If you can, interview one of them.

_____9. Learn what laws exist in your state or county to prevent litter and pollution.

_____10. How does litter effect our environment? How can we reduce or prevent litter? Find at least five ways.

_____11. Design a poster for litter prevention.

_____12. Choose an area that you notice has a lot of litter. Take before photos of the area, than clean up all the litter. Take after photos to show how different it looks with no more litter or garbage.

_____13. Play or teach a game to your troop that promotes litter control and/or environmental protection.

_____14. Have a "litter" scavenger hunt or racing game to see who can collect the most litter in a given amount of time.

_____15. How can litter harm wildlife? List a few ways it is harmful and how we can make a difference and prevent it.
