Preschool: Do three requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Learn what a bird is. What about them classifies them as such?
_____ 2.* Find out as much as you can about birds in your local environment by reading, observing, and talking to others.
Level 1: Do four requirements including the two starred *
_____1.* Do Preschool requirements 1 & 2.
_____2.* Be able to identify at least 3 species of birds. You may want to look at things like size, shape, color or other distinguishing marks. Learn about their life cycle, what they eat, how they protect themselves, their calls, and habits.
Level 2: Do five requirements including the two starred *
_____1.* Do Level 1 requirements 1 & 2.
_____2.* Do Level 1 requirement 2, but identify at least 5 species of birds.
Level 3: Do six requirements including the two starred *
_____1.* Do Level 2 requirements 1 & 2. If possible, observe a bird in the wild on at least 3 different occasions. Take notes on their behavior and compare them to what you have learned.
_____2.* Do Level 2 requirement 2, but identify at least 8 species of birds.
Level 4: Do seven requirements including the two starred *
_____1.* Do Level 3 requirements 1 & 2. If possible, observe a bird in the wild on at least 5 different occasions. Take notes on their behavior and compare them to what you have learned.
_____2.* Do Level 3 requirement 2, but identify at least 12 species of birds.
Level 5: Do nine requirements including the two starred *
_____1.* Do Level 4 requirements 1 & 2
_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
_____3. Visit a zoo, pet shop, or other place where you can see a bird being fed and cared for.
Level 2: Also interview the caretakers and find out what they like/dislike about their job.
Level 3: Do Dolphin level of this requirement and also find out what type of education or special training is necessary to work in this position.
Level 4 & 5: Do requirement 11.
_____4. Make something to attract, protect, or observe a bird.
_____5. Make a chart, poster, booklet, or other exhibit to teach others what you have learned while earning this badge.
_____6. Make a list of birds that might make good pets. What special equipment would you need to take care of them? What types of foods do they eat? Is this a pet that you would like to have? Why or why not?
_____7. Design and carry out a service project that will benefit a bird. This may be planting trees or flowers for them, raising money for organizations that protect endangered species of birds, gathering a volunteer crew to help out at a local animal shelter, etc.
_____8. Research any state and federal laws that protect certain types of birds. What birds are on the endangered species list? What specific protection do they receive? How would the extinction of them affect mankind?
_____9. What local or national organizations are there that study or protect birds? What do they do? Make a poster showing how you can help to protect an animal from your category. Eagle and Owl: Volunteer at least 4 hours to working with one of these organizations.
_____10. Find out which types of birds are beneficial to humans, which are nuisances, and which are harmful. Explain how people interact with each of these animals.
_____11. Shadow an animal caretaker for a day at a zoo, pet shop, or other place where you can see birds being fed and cared for. What careers are there in working with birds? What education or special training would you need? (Level 4 & 5)
_____12. Earn the Bird-watching badge at your level.
_____13. Participate in a community service project involving birds, such as cleaning up a pond or wetland, or volunteering at your local zoo or animal shelter.
